The downside of adding a stiffner - and this is moreso if you're a "widebody" - is that the belt can't contour to your body as it wears-in. Look at your leather belts that you have worn for a while - if you lay it out flat, it describes an arc.
If there were a plastic stiffner in the belt, it couldn't do that and it would be uncomfortable to wear under some conditions. Jim's bullhide belts are plenty stiff enough as is. Adios, Pizza Bob. I don't think it needs it, but if you want it in it, then go for it.
Duty, Honor, Country I've got both a horse and bull No stiffiner. I recommend the internal stiffner. I have one and it's my favorite belt. It took a little while to "break in" but it turned out to be one of my better purchases. If you like it, go for it. Personally I have found that I don't need the stiffener as i like the belt to conform to my body as I wear it.
BUMP I'd like to see more people comment on this. Trying to decide what to buy.

CornstalkCop, no difference in stability between bullhide and horsehide? Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but Beltman's horsehide comes as bullhide on the inside and horsehide on the outside, right? I have two belts from Beltman both have internal stiffners they make carrying much more comfortable. I just got a bullhide belt this week and you definitely don't need a stiffener, you can hardly put it on as is, it's so stiff.
