Ultrasonic-based instruments, such as the Field Signature Method, have been used with some success. However, the two main drawbacks of these techniques are their high cost and, more importantly, the criticality of placing the instrument in a representative location, as each unit only covers a small area on either side of it. With all monitoring instruments, in particular nonintrusive types, as they tend to be very expensive, it is critical to select the correct location for placing the instruments.
