Usually just put them on a white background and snap away. When I was living in Budapest, I got 4 crappy looking photos from a photo booth — like one of those you see people taking funny pictures in. It was surreal, but they were accepted for the various ID cards I needed. Good to know that Costco is also a good option in Canada. Yes, we have heard of people using the photo booth photos as well with many successes.

It is really amazing how little some people pay attention to all the specific requirements for documents. This is so helpful! We paid so much back in SA to get biometric photos taken in another city for our German documents, where here one can do it oneself in a photobooth for 5E. I much prefer taking the photo myself since I can decide if I like it or not!
I think the issue is getting the proportions right and some people just use scissors to carefully trim it to the right size. Biometric photos are definitely not worth spending a ton of money for in my opinion, especially if you have some time to go with a less expensive option. But I think many people feel obligated to spend the money because they are for such important purposes.
