Learn something new everyday. Never knew that was the reason for the "red". I always thought it was all of the chilies. The traditional salsa isn't spicy enough so we ask for their spicy salsa and that's what they bring out. It's incredible. Bessie - I normally go to the one in Emmaus because that's near my office. Bethlehem is closer to Hackettstown.

I'll have to scope out Cactus Blue. Never heard of it but always willing to try a new place. You order what you want from their lunch menu. They bring you out each item a la carte style. If you want more, you just have to ask. I don't believe I am alone GC.

Here is a place I have been to in NYC, look at the salsa and chips -- looks good huh Alone in what exactly? Salsa and chips generally come before you even order, buy you said "I can never get beyond". In an Indian restaurant do you get pappadams and mint sauce not to your liking and you walk out before knowing they have a dynamite jalfrezi? Do you get some bland duck sauce with the crisps at a Thai place and never know their masaman rocks because you won't even get to the point of placing an order?

That's what you've implied when you "can't get beyond it". It's one thing to say their chips aren't to taste and I'm not the biggest fan of the chips served at the two places that do that - the others don't even serve them - even if I think their salsa isn't so bad. Each of those places have some excellent food, even if there are places an hour away that have better, and even if the pre-meal free food isn't perfect.

Bessie, I was the one singing Cactus Blue's praises. They had a booth at Musikfest and their fish tacos were out of this world. I still haven't had the chance to go to their "brick and mortar" location, but look forward to it sometime soon. I know people rave about them, but just the thought makes me gag.

However, I hate to miss out on something people love. You are somewhat right about the Indian restaurant Regarding duck sauce and crisps I could care less, I don't eat that stuff. Fors some reason you are defending a restaurant that for some reason can't expend a little more effort to serve fresh salsa that is not watered down. It has been so long but I don't think the chips were that bad but the salsa is not as good as Jose Tejas which is not good for a small Mexican restaurant. And if it is the cost then charge for seconds and keep the quantity down on the free first.

Well, if you don't like fish, it's unlikely that you will enjoy fish tacos. Most places you get it, it's a breaded, fried whitefish cut into pieces, not unlike fish sticks, to be honest. Otherwise, it's a taco Then they served two tacos with sides of black beans and Mexican rice. I was impressed with the quality of the food and I'm not one to give praise lightly. My wife had the chicken tacos and was equally happy with the quality. Use taco seasoning or whatever seasonings you like on them. I like them inside a soft corn tortilla. Fill it with some pieces of fish, shredded cabbage or lettuce if you prefer , fresh pico de gallo, cilantro, lime juice, and avocado.

It's light, healthy, and tastes great. GC - I get where you're coming from but I have to say, if the chips and salsa aren't good, it really brings the whole meal down for me too especially the salsa since I put that on everything. I munch on the chips as I eat my entree so they have to be good. Ahhh Ianimal,,thanks for refreshing an old woman's memory.. At any rate, I do remember the conversation now. Now I definitely have to get there, 2 great recommendations for Cactus Blue.

Very disappointing! The food is not fresh. I make better burritos in my house for less money. After numerous tries, we've decided that we'd rather cook than walk a block away. I was really routing for this place. The Italian restaurant was always packed! I feel like they cut corners to save money and the result is poor quality food. You totally missed the point then.

My comments are in relation to how anyone judges any restaurant which is why I mentioned all the other types of food. I think you have to take in the whole picture instead of rating the whole place on a pre-meal condiment. I've never walked out of an Italian restaurant and missed the dynamite veal picatta just because they served those thin bread sticks.

Emaxx at least described why the chips matter more to him than most. To me if the snacks aren't to my liking I just move on instead of getting hung up on it. If I don't care for the real meal, then sure that's reason to not like the place. It's just all about the entire picture. As for El Mejicano itself I don't like all their food, the burrito's are definitely better than their fajitas.

Their enchiladas are better than their soft tacos. And I've had both better and worse chips and salsa. I'm not trying to go out of my way in defense, just saying I get what I like and stay away from the rest. Additionally, I was definitely defending the ability to get good food locally. Some of the other places are similar, and not everything is perfect.

But each one has their merits. I did have their enchiladas and it was good but I was not a fan of the cheese they used but to each his own. Not to beat a dead horse but do not serve watered-down salsa that drips off chips like water. In that case don't serve free chips.

Check this hole in New Hope, damn good hole-in-the-wall Mexican. The chips are extra but the salsa bar is open for use on everything. Stop the boat last time Blue Cactus was reviewed in HL, it was not loved. I actually opted not to use my Rest.

Do folks really like it? Should I uncrumple the coupon? El Mejicano is not traditional Tex-Mex, but I have had pretty good meals except once when they were busy. The Salsa is like spaghetti sauce and weak for some reason, but it you ask for hotter salsa, they have always delivered. So I still like it, like the different approach from run-of-the-mill Tex-Mex. Check out El Taco Loco for hardcore fans. The place is a hole-in-the-wall for sure. You order and pay at the register and then they drop off the food when it is ready.

They use all throw away plates, forks, cups so they don't need to dishwash but not so eco friendly. Prices are good but they get you on the soda price like anyone else but they will give you water without making a face.
