When I drive around Manhattan not very often , I just park at whatever garage is near where I need to be a monthly spot at Icon gets me a discount at Icon lots around the city. When my parents come in from NJ, they just park in a convenient lot. It's great to do research, but in the scheme of all of the expenses you'll incur in NYC , stressing over saving a few dollars on parking is probably not the biggest part of it.
Nevertheless, if you get a Groupon for cheaper parking or find a deal on line, go for it.
There really isn't a "one best" situation. Prices fluctuate by neighborhoods, generally, the further east of 5th Ave or the further west of 5th that you go, the cheaper it will be. There are early bird specials and late night specials at long as you're in and out by a certain time. There are plenty of garages, I've never reserved in advance and don't know anyone who has.
You will find an open garage almost anywhere you want to go, if the first one is full, the next one won't be. This is for Tribeca Friday night of Fashion week.
My concern is that a native New Yorker might be able to anticipate and navigate to the 'next' garage much easier than a tourist. I think knowing I have some worthless piece of paper to show the valet might be calming in the days leading up lol. Icon has locations all over the city, they are very reputable and I've used them a lot over the years. If you download an app like Waze, it gives you the option to locate nearby parking garages.

Since it's easier to listen to an app talking to you than to find addresses which are almost impossible to see , that will be very helpful to you. Honestly, I just go up and down streets when I need a garage For Fashion Week, most people will be in taxis, ubers, and fancy car service companies. You will find a garage. I drive in a few times a year though usually at night. I don't agree with Risa, you can save a lot with coupons, way more than a few dollars. I usually check several and agree with Kaye that they have somewhat different networks but there's a lot of overlap. Also, I've noticed that Best Parking requires you to pre-pay now, it used to be you could just print the coupon and drive up.

I've been using Park Whiz lately with good results and what I especially like is that you can cancel up to the last moment so you can reserve and pre-pay but if, when you get in, you manage to find a free spot you can still cancel as long as the reservation time hasn't started.
Icon itself has many coupons specific to each of their location and I like those because then you aren't tied to specific times. If your reservation says PM - PM you cannot start earlier than and if you pick up after you may be in for some serious sticker shock this has happened to me. Definitely check them because their's no pre-payment required.

It's not always obvious what the address is so be sure you are where you think you are when you drive in. Like the previous post stated I actually showed up 45 minutes early last year and was told I needed to wait to park my car otherwise the garage wouldn't honor the price, I had a meeting to be at so I couldn't wait, So I just cancelled the reservation and found another garage 2 blocks away for a similar price.
