Remanufactured Steering Gears

I ran one reman from advance, burnt that junk up in less than two months. I've always bought low mileage stock junkyard boxes with good luck. Returned and retrieved my old steer gear and purchased a seal kit to repair it. My reason for changing steer gear was do to it leaking and thought installing a reman would be quick fix.

My gear box is leaking too AGR makes an aftermarket gear box that might be worth checking out. Last edited by Canigetanamen; at AM. Canigetanamen is offline. My red head box is awesome and the difference it made in tightening up my steering was amazing. I didn't even have a particularly bad box to start with, I was just doing the entire front end anyways. I would highly recommend the red head to anyone.

I haven't had personal experience with anything else so all I can go off of is various other rumors - I've heard the agr has terrible customer service and can take forever to get your box, and I don't think I've ever heard of a parts store reman being recommended by anyone.

I saw them spoken highly of on the forums here and they seem to get very positive reviews, and they had what appeared to be a decent product at a decent price. I pulled my old box and replaced it with the RedHead and I was happy with the way it performed until it started leaking at the input seal.

I sent them photos and they agreed it was leaking so they sent me a new one.

I once again replaced the box. Now, this one they sent me is ALSO leaking, from the top cap this time. And its leaking a lot worse. I will attach the photos below. There is a mess of ATF all over my steering skid, and its been blowing off onto my driver side spring, shock, antirock link and the track bar mount, as you can see in the photos.

In just a week since the replacement, I topped up my power steering reservoir and now its below the cold mark after a long drive, photo also below. I checked the power steering lines and connections, and they are all dry. The reservoir is not cracked, the only place I can see it leaking from is around the top cap. Customer service is great, product is not. I will be sending this back and buying another brand. I depend on my Jeep to get me too and from work every single day, so I expect quality when it comes to something as important as steering.

This is ridiculous, I cannot recommend this company to anyone for any reason. Attached Thumbnails. FalloutMaster is offline. Quote Quick Reply. Remove Advertisements. User Profile. Sorry to hear. Given that he has had two leaking gears, I would suspect an issue with the pump being in a continuous over pressure condition. I see the leaking top cap when folks with high performance pumps hold the wheels at full lock. The high pressure extrudes the o-ring seal out from under the cap and makes a giant mess.

I'd find a pressure gauge and check the system pressure before I did much else. You bring up a good point mrblaine.

  • My only question would be why my OEM steering box would not have leaked at all over the 2 years I owned the Jeep if it was an overpressure situation? The pump has not changed, only the steering box, and typically the last part changed is the cause in my experience. I was really careful not to overfill the pump when I filled it up. What sort of pressure gauge would I need and what is normal pressure for a pump on a TJ? Also keep in mind, the first box they sent me leaked from the input seal on the worm gear shaft, a completely different leak than I have now.

And it was more of a seep, it wasn't much to be concerned about, whereas right now I have what looks like my box is bleeding a lot of fluid very quickly. My Specs Engine: 2.

I have to agree that their customer service is great. I had a little issue when my first box arrived - being that it was the wrong box lol. It was the older TJ style box, but it had inserts in the threaded ports for compression fittings I think. I assume it was for a CJ manual to power steering conversion or something along those lines. Anyways, after giving them a call they were very apologetic, and sent out a correct box the same day. I did have to put another deposit down on the new box, but I was happy too when they calmly and politely explained why.
