Report 2 years ago Original post by Specksavers Ive never used windows. Mac doesn't generally require Anti-virus but I use Sophos which is free.

My question is whether it's worth paying for anti-virus, or the free stuff will do. Hi again, I use Avast free antivirus on all my computers PC and two laptops and have found it v good; if you have a query, their helpline co is called Alwil - very professional and honest is also very good. As Hopson97 put it rather interestingly and I presume he is assuming you are a guy!

Also, as a general tip for all PC users, don't enter passwords on links from any email, and look out for odd popup windows appearing that have poor grammar or spelling and miserable logos AND ignore or report any emails that are threatening or trying to pretend that there is some problem with your computer - they are mostly crooks! Original post by Specksavers Macbook Pro 13" not touch bar model. Report Thread starter 2 years ago Original post by BigYoSpeck I'd do some research as to what environment you'll typically work in. You might find that the platform is irrelevant to the course material if they want you working on the universities own platform. Doesn't have a precision touchpad.

Autumn Deals for Students and Family

Probably not a deal breaker as it's still great but it misses out on some fancy features as a result. Unless you're married to macOS then a Macbook is an overpriced piece of jewellery for your needs. The keyboard on the latest model is pretty marmite, some people love it, some hate it. I'd trial it before making a commitment. If you do love macOS then, well there is no other choice. You can also run Windows and Linux on a mac If you can live with the webcam position then these are probably your best choice.

The screen to device ratio makes them really compact but still practical. An XPS would be my choice for the compactness. I couldn't live with a mac, I'm too used to touch screen in Windows now, and if I were looking at paying a huge premium for a device then I'd be getting a Surface Book, which there is likely to be a new model of this year. I'd hold off buying until all the back to school deals start popping up as well.

TOP 5: Best Budget Desktop Computer 2019

Original post by Specksavers Very helpful, thanks. Ive just been to Currys to look at some laptops. The spectre x actually looks pretty cheap and plasticky imo, atleast compared to pictures of it.

That was a bit of a let down. Sadly, they did not have the 2 in 1 model on show, so I don't really know if it looks good. Great name!

And I mean a real one like the T or X series. Their keyboards are in my opinion the best laptop keyboards, and the trackpoint cursor controller is really useful when you're coding and don't need to move your hand away from the keyboard to control the cursor. They ain't pretty but they're great tools. Jirga Badges: 2. Quick Reply. Submit reply. Attached files. Write a reply Back to top.
